Members of Michigan Atheists who volunteer to staff the organization’s information booth at street fairs and other places are sometimes asked, “Why are you guys here today?” The questioners generally understand why churches, mosques, religious charities and other religious organizations want a public presence at such events -- to present their message and try to win converts and contributions. The questioners often seem to think that, since Atheists don’t believe or espouse religious claims, we have no message to present to the public. Quite the contrary.
Evangelical Christians claim that belief in their particular religion is necessary for one to be a moral person; claim that they are the arbiters of morality; and claim that that moral authority should translate to political authority. That way lies theocracy.
In fact, there are two completely separate kinds of morality: basic and cultural.
